Each month, 3SIXTY gives a shameless plug for one of our regular advertisers. This month, Jamie Hakim talks sugaring with Stuart Green.
Let's face it. Rightly or wrongly, most of us find a bloke with a hairy back a total turn off - especially when it spills out of the top of a t-shirt. Enough said.
The removal of body hair of the male variety has traditionally been by way of shaving or waxing. Shaving is a false economy, as the hair only grows back thicker and waxing can be bloody painful - especially around your more 'sensitive' areas.
Thankfully, there is a better and more natural alternative in and around Brighton & Hove.
A mixture of sugar, lemon and water is applied as a warm paste to the hairy area and a smooth piece of linen is then applied. Then with a gentle flick, the linen is removed from the body - taking the sugar, the hair and the root with it. Unlike wax, the sugar only sticks to the hairs and as a result is far less painful as well as removing dry and dead skin cells, leaving the skin soft and smooth. The other method, known as hand sugaring, involves rolling a ball of the sugar mixture by hand over the hairs which are gently pulled out and into the ball.
“Think of your hair as a lawn - shaving, like mowing, simply cuts the growth back and encourages the hair to grow, stronger” says Stuart. “Sugaring removes the hair from the roots so any re growth is finer and easier to remove the next time round”
But what about the pain? Stuart says that it is less painful than having a plaster removed from a hairy leg. Shoulders and backs are the most popular areas amongst his clients but basically anywhere on the body is possible - including delicate areas.
Following the treatment the areas generally stay hair free for around 4-8 weeks and over time the hair is said to return much lighter and finer and if you're planning on getting sugared before heading off to the sun, don't leave it until the last minute before making an appointment.
Stuart treats guys of all ages from every walk of life with rates starting at just £20 for back and shoulders and he even comes to your home bringing with him a treatment table, towels and aftercare creams. He's also keen to stress that booking early is essential especially in the run up to Pride or before heading off on your holidays.
In addition, Stuart is also a fully qualified and IHBC/IIHHT registered massage therapist specialising in Indian Head Massage as well as Swedish and Holistic. He's even a dab hand at Hopi ear candling which helps with ear problems.
No wonder he's known as “The Body Mechanic”.
